Art Nouveau - Art Deco

Colors used in the Art Nouveau era (1890-1905) tended toward colored taken from nature which complemented the organic design motifs most frequently used by the designers and architects of the time. If you choose an Art Nouveau color scheme for your next interior design or renovation project, consider the artworks of Mucha, Klimt, and Gaudi as starting points for your palette.

The well-known era of Modernism (1910-1930), which included the Bauhaus movement and Cubism, included some of the strongest art influences we have today. Artists such as Matisse, Picasso, Gris and Mondrian combined bold colors with stark neutrals to create some of the most well-known (and best-loved) color palettes used in design. Consider bold primary colors like Cobalt, Red and Yellow, along with white and black. Sharp, contrasting colors and stark lines that make a statement are what the early Modernism movement was all about.

The Art Deco period (1925-1939) combined unusual materials, such as ebony, steel and marble, with lively pastel color palettes to offset the stark qualities of those materials. While walls were usually kept in the lighter end of the color spectrum, accent colors included cobalt, teal, black, aqua, coral, orange and red.
